Ghana’s Abeku Jackson has broken another National Record in the Finals of the 50metres Butterfly Men which earn him a second bronze medal at the ongoing BRICS 2024 Games in Kazan-Russia.
The Previous record was 24.03secs, and the New Record is 23.87secs.
The competition, which runs from 12–23 June, 2024, saw Jackson not only clinch a podium finish but also rewrite the Ghanaian record for the event.
Jackson clocked an impressive 53.08 seconds in the final, shaving a significant 0.31 seconds off his previous national record set at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (53.39 seconds).
Despite a valiant effort, the Ghanaian fell short of the gold and silver medals, which went to Russia’s German Zazhirskiy (52.54 seconds) and Belarus’ Grigori Pekarski (52.66 seconds), respectively.
Jackson’s journey to the podium began in Heat 1, where he swam a time of 53.74 seconds to secure second place.
He finished ahead of Belarus’ Arseni Barzhakou (54.02 seconds) but trailed another Belarusian, Ivan Shamshuryn (53.60 seconds), who claimed the top spot in the heat.
Jackson is not the only Ghanaian athlete at the BRICS Games, with wrestler Joana Greene Adomako set to showcase her skills in the belt-wrestling event scheduled for Saturday (22 June).
